"After a three-year apprenticeship with my father John Skelton — sculptor, artist and letter carver —I worked on commissions involving plaques for buildings, memorial work and house names.
In 1991 I took part in an exhibition locally showing my ‘free work’ and continued to exhibit at various exhibitions in Sussex and London from then on. I often carve my own poems, sometimes with carved illustrations.
Slate for a letter carver is a dream material as it takes the carved form so well and cleanly, and is long lasting. It also receives paint and gilding well, and the contrast of the cut letter ensures good visibility."
